The Nightside of the Zodiac: The Astrological Secret to Ending Procrastination

A Deeper Look at Degrees, Decans, and The Macrocosm

Whether you’ve got prominent Capricorn placements in your chart or you’re feeling the Capricorn Stellium transit, either way, we’ve got some things to hash out.

[No matter what season of the year you’re reading this… this is a powerful teaching and tool for self-reflection.]

Firstly, Capricorn season is always a time to go within, re-structure, find balance between the emotional and physical planes, and of course, to self reflect.

In fact, if I was going to give Capricorn a nickname, I’d call her Ms. Self-reflection.

Ms. Self-reflection despises wasting time, which is why self-reflection is never a wasted past time. It’s necessary if you want to get shit done and get it done RIGHT the first time.

And anyone who can’t (or won’t) embrace the planning stage of a project, which requires an ample amount of self-reflection, will always make excuses or find ways to procrastinate.

But if you’d like to be in divine flow with the macrocosm and work with Capricorn energy, then we must get to the bedrock of what Capricorn and her season is really all about.

So let’s break it down.

Degrees, Decans, and The Macrocosm

The way I’d like to indulge this information is by helping you to see the importance and relevancy of DEGREES in an astrological chart.

While many astrologers may skim over the degrees during a reading or when defining a transit, if we are trying to get to the bottom of our lack of commitment or procrastination issues, looking at the degrees gives us the framework to nip those issues in the bud.

In this chart, taken January 10th, 2024, you can see that the Sun is in Capricorn at 19 degrees. You can also see the Capricorn Ascendent at 19 degrees, the Moon in Capricorn at 8 degrees, Mars in Capricorn at 4 degrees, and Pluto in its final stage at 29 degrees Capricorn.

Dannnnng…. That’s a lot of Capricorn!

These degrees tell a very eye-opening story about the cosmos.

Just like you, the cosmic world has its rhythm, seasons, and cycles. When we work with these macrocosmic rhythms, we learn how to DANCE with the cosmos which makes everything easier because we stop fighting the tide and learn how to roll with it.

As you know, there is a time for everything — a time for Rest, a time for Play, and a time for Work.

Each zodiac sign has 30 degrees, of which there are 12 zodiac signs totaling 360 degrees - a perfect circle.

These degrees are 0-29 (zero being the 1st degree of the zodiac sign, etc…)

I want you to think about the degrees as the subconscious characteristics of the zodiac sign; I call this the Nightside of the Zodiac.

The degrees are broken up into 3 parts called Decans.

0-9 degrees = 1st Decan
10-19 degrees = 2nd Decan
20-29 degrees = 3rd Decan

These decans (or subconscious characteristics) have personalities, goals, ambitions, FLAWs, etc…

Think of them like archetypes.

They have a Mind and an Agenda of their own and when you innerstand their characteristics, you stop fighting against the tide and learn how to work with their energies — and eventually mature them (this is what we do in The Mythic City Method) so they don’t control you or disrupt your desired end result.

If you’ve ever wondered what procrastination really is, it’s basically a Decan you’re choosing to ignore.

For example:
Perhaps you’ve heard people say they were ‘born on the cusp’ of a zodiac sign, which generally leads them to believe they possess a combination of the characteristics between 2 signs.

I am born at zero degrees Capricorn. Some people might say that I embody many of the qualities of Sagittarius, since I’m ‘born on the cusp’. But actually, the first couple degrees (or 1st decan) of Capricorn are actually intensified characteristics of Capricorn Energy, not mild nor shared with Sagittarius.

If anything, those born in the final degrees of Sagittarius possess more characteristics of Capricorn because they are completing the Sagittarius season preparing us for Capricorn season.

Therefore, only those who are born in the 3rd decan or 20-29 degrees of a zodiac sign could be considered a cusp baby.

Think of it this way…

Let’s say you were eating a piece of pizza and you’re ready to take your final bite. You’ve already been enjoying the pizza for a few minutes and the feeling or sensation in your mouth is familiar.

But let’s say your friend offers you a bite of ice cream just as you are about to take that final bite of pizza. You take a lick and the ice cream is a shockingly different taste. Am I right?

Well, it’s the same thing with the zodiac.

As we enter into the early DEGREES of a zodiac sign, it’s a shocker — like that bite of ice cream as you’re finishing your slice of pizza. The ice cream feels new and unfamiliar, as your tastebuds are doing their best to adapt to the experience.

Let’s return back to the astrology chart above.

You see Mars in Capricorn at 4 degrees? This is an early phase of Capricorn for Mars. That’s because Capricorn is in the 1st decan, which is intensified Capricorn Energy.

I’d call this a harmonious placement in that the early degrees of Capricorn, which is intensified energy around work goals, self-reflection, ambition, and planning, which Mars loves because Mars is the planet of motivation — they’re like 2 peas in a pod.

Let’s take that example to your life right now.

+ Are you embracing the intensity of Mars in Capricorn? (working with the macrocosm)
+ Or are you trying to ignore it? (working against the macrocosm)
+ Do you feel unmotivated? (working against the macrocosm)
+ Or are you self-reflecting, setting goals, and planning for the life you desire? (working with the macrocosm)

If you’re trying to ignore this energy, then you are working against the macrocosm.

As students learn inside the Inner Temple Magick Academy, the idea behind magick is that you learn your individual rhythm, energy, and cycle, AND then work those rhythms into the tides of the macrocosm.

Essentially, what I’m trying to convey here is that the early degrees of a sign are intended to wake you up! Grab your attention! Pull you into a new phase and get the blood flowing in that newly awakened energy or state.

If it’s Capricorn, it’s likely about work and self-reflection. If it’s Pisces, it’s a time to imagine and develop your intuition.

Those first few days of entering a new sign no matter the planet, is meant to be a time to slap cold water on your face and prepare you for the new energy.

We do this during the New Moon cycles, but why not ALL the planets?

Clearly, astrology is a massive subject and working with the moon is a great starting point, but if you really want to enhance your magick and allow your life to unfold naturally — WITH the cycles of the macrocosm and your own internal cycles (the microcosm), then I encourage you to start looking at the DEGREES.

Just start noticing when the zodiac signs are in those “early degrees” or 1st Decan.
